Sight Word Cover, Write, Check

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: recalling high-frequency word spellings

1

Look at said. Cover it, write it, then put a check by each matching letter.

2

Study was. Write it from memory. If it differs, circle the letter to fix.

3

Look at have. Cover and write it. Count how many letters you remembered.

4

Study they. Write it from memory, then underline the letter pair you almost missed.

5

Look at you. Cover it, write it, and use it in: ___ can help.

6

Choose the word you needed to check most. Try it one final time without looking.

Grown-up note: Ask your learner to explain one answer in their own words.

How to teach this page

  1. Step 1Fold a scrap paper flap over the model rather than asking the child to close their eyes.
  2. Step 2Treat a mismatch as useful information: compare one letter at a time without calling it wrong.
  3. Step 3Finish by having the child read the final word aloud, linking spelling to reading.
